Udhauli Parva: A celebration of gratitude and nature by the Kirati community

Historically, the Kirats, who ruled Nepal for 1,225 years (800 BC–300 AD), followed this pattern of migration during colder months, which inspired the term “Udhauli,” meaning “downwards.”

The festival centers around rituals such as Chula Puja, performed by the Nakchhong priest, and the vibrant Sakela Naach, a traditional group dance that unites participants of all ages. Adorned in ethnic attire and jewelry, men and women express joy and community spirit through this dance.

Udhauli also holds mythological significance, commemorating the love story of Paruhang and Sumnima, whose union is celebrated in the Sakela dance.

While urbanization may have altered traditional migration practices, the festival continues to thrive, bringing together Kirati communities across Nepal and showcasing their rich cultural heritage.
