World Rhino Day 2024: A call to protect endangered species
World Rhino Day is being celebrated globally today, raising awareness about the urgent need to protect rhinos, one of the planet’s most endangered animals. The day highlights the ongoing poaching crisis and conservation efforts aimed at saving the species from extinction.
Currently, five species of rhinos exist: White, Black, Greater One-Horned, Javan, and Sumatran. Poaching remains a severe threat, with nearly 3 rhinos killed every day for their horns. Population numbers are critically low, with fewer than 80 Sumatran and 76 Javan rhinos left in the wild. Conservation efforts in Nepal and India have seen success, with the Greater One-Horned Rhino population increasing to 3,700.
As poaching persists, World Rhino Day serves as a reminder of the importance of global conservation efforts to save these gentle giants.
