Yomari Punhi: A celebration of harvest, and culture in Newar community
The Yomari Punhi Festival, celebrated by Nepal’s Newar community, is an important cultural event that marks the full moon of Mangsir (November-December), a time when the Newars celebrate a bountiful rice harvest. The festival, which has its roots in the Kathmandu Valley, involves praying to several deities, with Annapurna, the goddess of harvest, being the chief deity. The festival’s main feature is the yomari, a traditional rice flour dumpling filled with brown cane sugar (chaku) and sesame seeds. The dumpling, which can also be filled with Khuwa (a type of dairy), is typically shaped like a fish, symbolizing fertility and prosperity.
