NCELL Reports Rs 650 Million Damage During Gen Z Protests
Kathmandu — Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel has called for the swift resolution of all disputes involving telecom operator Ncell, stating that clarity and transparency are essential for restoring public trust in the company.
During an inspection of Ncell’s Nakkhu office on Monday, Minister Kharel said that long-standing issues related to share transactions, financial obligations, and ongoing legal disputes must be addressed promptly. “Ncell’s business must remain respected in the eyes of the state and the public. Resolving these disputes and ensuring clean business practices will allow the company to focus on delivering quality service,” he said. The minister added that the government would fully support lawful and transparent operations.
Ncell officials briefed Minister Kharel on the extensive damage caused during the recent Gen Z protests. The company’s central office in Lainchaur was vandalized, looted, and set on fire on September 9, forcing operations to relocate to Nakkhu. Ncell estimates losses of around Rs. 650 million nationwide due to vandalism during the protests.
The minister said he visited the office to assess the damage firsthand. He also welcomed Ncell’s plan to introduce new service packages aimed at students and Gen Z users. “They have shared their intention to launch new packages and expand connectivity in remote regions, including additional 4G towers up to Gorakshep near Everest Base Camp,” he noted. He reiterated that the government is ready to assist where necessary.
Ncell is preparing to launch Gen Z–specific packages and a nationwide scholarship program worth Rs. 10 million for 100 students. The company also outlined its plan to enhance high-altitude connectivity by adding five more towers in the Everest region.
Ncell CEO Michael Foley emphasized the need for policy reforms, stating that Nepal’s telecom services are still below international standards. “Telecommunication has become an essential service. It is important for the government to prioritize policy facilitation to strengthen the sector,” he said.
The government, Minister Kharel said, is actively working to resolve policy-related and legal issues affecting Ncell, ensuring that all solutions remain within the framework of the law.
