NTB launched Ice Climbing training in Manang
Kathmandu – The seventh Ice Climbing Level One training has been launched in Humde, Manang through a collaboration between the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Nepal Mountain Instructors’ Association (NMIA). The programme, scheduled from January 27 to February 5, 2026, has been focused on technical and practical exercises required for ice climbing in high-altitude Himalayan regions.
Prior to the field phase, a soft opening had been held in Kathmandu on January 23, where participants were provided with theoretical classes and orientation sessions. Through the preparatory phase, trainees were readied for the intensive, field-based training to be conducted in the high Himalayas.
The training has been aimed at strengthening technical ice-climbing skills, promoting international safety standards, and expanding employment opportunities in the mountaineering sector. According to NTB, alignment has been maintained with Nepal’s long-term vision of delivering world-class, safe, and professional mountaineering services from the Himalayas. The global recognition earned by Nepali climbers and guides for their expertise and professionalism has also been highlighted.
A total of 36 participants have been enrolled in the programme, while training has been delivered under the guidance of 11 experienced instructors. Hands-on use of essential equipment—including ice axes, crampons, harnesses, helmets, carabiners, belay devices, slings, and ropes—has been included in the curriculum. Modules on rope fixing, anchor building, safety and protection systems, rescue procedures, and practical exercises required for high-altitude technical mountaineering have also been incorporated.
The ongoing field-based training in Humde has been observed by NTB Senior Director Hikmat Singh Ayer and NTB Manager Bimal Kadel, and it has been stated that the shared commitment of NTB and NMIA towards capacity building and professional development in mountaineering is expected to deliver positive outcomes.
Upon successful completion, participants are to be awarded internationally recognised certification, through which professional credibility is expected to be enhanced and employment opportunities are expected to be increased in both Nepal and the global mountaineering industry.
