U.S. Lowers Nepal Travel Advisory to Level 2, Urges Caution
Kathmandu– The U.S. Department of State has lowered its travel advisory for Nepal to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, according to its latest update released on March 31, 2026.
The advisory notes that nationwide demonstrations that began in September 2025 have now stopped, and the overall security situation in the country is stable. However, it warns that demonstrations and localized unrest may still occur, particularly in urban areas, and can arise with little warning. Travelers are advised to avoid large crowds and follow instructions from local authorities.
On healthcare, the advisory states that hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley are generally better equipped than those in other regions but may still face overcrowding and shortages of medicines or equipment. Foreign nationals are required to pay for their own treatment, and travelers are strongly encouraged to carry necessary medications and obtain travel health insurance, including medical evacuation coverage.
The advisory also highlights Nepal’s vulnerability to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides. During the monsoon season (June to September), heavy rainfall can disrupt transportation, damage infrastructure, and delay emergency response.
Travelers planning to visit Nepal are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), monitor local news, remain flexible with travel plans, and ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance.
