Kathmandu – Families of those killed during Nepal’s Gen Z movement gathered at the former Parliament building in New Baneshwar on Tuesday to honour their loved ones on Gen Z Martyrs’ Day.
The memorial programme was organised by the Gen Z Martyrs Welfare Society and attended by government ministers, lawmakers, bereaved families and other participants.
Family members lit oil lamps and laid flowers in memory of the victims. Many became emotional during the ceremony, with tears filling their eyes as they remembered those they had lost.
The government declared Bhadra 23 as Gen Z Martyrs’ Day and announced a nationwide public holiday to commemorate those killed during the movement.
Nineteen people were killed after police opened fire during demonstrations in Kathmandu on Bhadra 23. Protests spread across the country the following day, with 76 people including demonstrators and security personnel reported dead over the two days. Public and private properties were also damaged by arson during the unrest.
