Kathmandu to set Smart E-Bike Service Zum rides,, questions raised over parking and safety
Kathmandu-Kathmandu is preparing for a new chapter in urban mobility as Zum Rides Pvt. Ltd. gets ready to launch 200 smart electric bicycles in the Ring Road area in the coming weeks. The service promises fast, clean, and affordable rides, but concerns about parking locations and bike safety are already being discussed.
The company will operate through designated smart stations placed across key areas within the city. While exact locations are yet to be announced, these stations are expected in busy and accessible zones such as New Baneshwor, Thamel, Jawalakhel, Kalanki, and other major junctions along the Ring Road. Users will be able to locate and park bikes only at these approved stations through the mobile app, which helps maintain order and reduces instances of unauthorised parking.
Safety, however, remains a major concern in a city where cases of bike theft have been on the rise. To address this, the system is expected to include GPS tracking, QR code-based unlocking, mandatory KYC verification, and restricted operating zones. These features make it easier to monitor each bicycle and reduce the chances of theft or misuse. In addition, penalties for improper use and real-time tracking could further strengthen security.
Sharing his excitement, Nepali photojournalist Sunil Sharma said he has experienced similar services abroad. “I mostly travel using ride-sharing bikes in Kathmandu. During my visit to China, I used such smart bicycle services, and they were extremely convenient. After decades, something I once imagined is finally here in our city. I’m excited and would definitely use it, but I hope the pricing is user-friendly,” he said.
Experts also suggest that for long-term success, the company should ensure proper station management, install surveillance where possible, and encourage users to take responsibility while using shared services.
With growing traffic and pollution challenges, this initiative could be a step toward a smarter and greener Kathmandu. Still, its success will depend on how well it handles practical concerns like parking management and safety.
