Government warns trekking firms over unauthorized Base Camp stays

Kathmandu –The government has stepped up enforcement after trekking companies began marketing overnight stay packages at Everest Base Camp during the peak climbing season.
The Department of Tourism has expressed serious concern, stating that some companies have been promoting such packages in violation of existing regulations.
According to the Mountaineering Regulation 2059 (2002), only authorized individuals including members of climbing expeditions, expedition leaders, mountain guides, high-altitude workers, base camp staff, and local workers are allowed to stay at the base camp. Any other individuals require prior approval from the department.
Monitoring and enforcement of these provisions are the responsibility of the liaison officer. Currently, the Department of Tourism has also set up a temporary field office at Everest Base Camp to strengthen oversight and facilitate operations.
Authorities have warned that any activities carried out in violation of these regulations will lead to strict action.
