Kathmandu – Women across Kathmandu gathered at Pashupatinath Temple, the Shiva Temple at Makhan, and other Shiva shrines to mark Haritalika Teej. Dressed in traditional red attire, devotees offered prayers, observed rituals and fasts, and celebrated the festival through singing and dancing. Teej is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva and is one of Nepal’s major festivals celebrated by women.
Beyond its religious significance, Teej has evolved into an important cultural and social occasion, providing women with a space for community, celebration and expression. In contemporary Nepal, the festival also highlights changing social roles, with women using Teej gatherings and songs to express views on relationships, family life and social issues.
