Open Sport Climbing Competition at Crimpanzee Adventure Hub to honour Late Babu Chiri Sherpa
The first-ever ‘Late Babu Chiri Sherpa Open Sport Climbing Competition‘ is going to be organized at Crimpanzee Adventure Hub in Boudha.
Today, during a press conference at the Crimpanzee Adventure Hub, the President of Alpine Sports Association, INC, Ngawang Nima Sherpa, provided information about the competition scheduled to take place on the 1st of Chaitra (14 March).
President Sherpa informed about the program organized jointly by the Alpine Sports Association and Everest Summiteers Association. He stated, “Through this event, we aim to have a positive impact on adventurous sports and enhance the experience of sports development in Nepal.”
The formation of the Alpine Sports Association – North America – Nepal aims to promote adventurous mountaineering sports internationally. Also, mentioned the establishment of the Association is to enhance adventurous mountaineering sports at an international level.
Maya Sherpa, the President of the Everest Summiteers Association, expressed that the competition aims to celebrate the achievements of the ‘Late Babu Chiri Sherpa’, known worldwide for his achievements as a mountaineer.
The Nepal National Mountaineering Instructors Association will provide technical support (route setting, judging, safety, and rescue services) for this competition. The competition will be held separately between men and women. Cash prizes of fifty thousand, thirty thousand, and fifteen thousand will be awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners, respectively.
Late Babu Chiri Sherpa is considered one of the greatest mountaineers to date. He has summited Mt. Everest ten times (including four times from China’s side).
He climbed Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen for more than 21 hours in the spring season (still a world record), and climbed it from the south side in 16 hours and 56 minutes.
Unfortunately, on April 29, 2001, during his 11th attempt to summit Everest, he tragically passed away.
