Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi merger aims to become the 3rd largest automaker
Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are in discussions for a potential three-way merger that could make them the world’s third-largest carmaker. The merger would bring together Japan’s second and third-largest automakers, along with Mitsubishi, under a joint holding company.
The proposed merger is driven by the need to address falling sales and rising competition from Chinese automakers. Additionally, the high costs of transitioning from traditional combustion engines to electric vehicles have put significant financial pressure on the companies.
Honda and Nissan have already begun the integration process, with Mitsubishi expected to decide on joining the partnership by January 2025. By pooling their resources, the three companies aim to enhance efficiency, drive innovation, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.
The talks, announced on Monday, target completion by August 2026. As the automotive industry undergoes transformative changes, the companies are positioning themselves to adapt and thrive in the face of growing global challenges.
