Bird Flu Brought Under Control in Seven of Nepal’s Eleven Affected Districts
Kathmamndu-Bird flu, a highly contagious avian disease that had spread across 11 districts of Nepal, has now been brought under control in seven districts.According to the Department of Livestock Services, the outbreak has been contained in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Mahottari, Bara, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi. However, the disease has yet to be fully controlled in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, and Kavrepalanchok, which remain under close surveillance.
To contain the outbreak, the department deployed specialized technical teams to the affected areas. These teams safely culled and disposed of infected poultry, eggs, feed, and other poultry-related materials, according to the department’s spokesperson, Dr. Mukul Upadhyay. To prevent further transmission, animal quarantine offices also tightened monitoring at border checkpoints and other locations, seizing and destroying poultry being transported illegally.
With the situation improving in several districts, the department has begun easing some of the restrictions on poultry transportation.Dr. Upadhyay said that federal, provincial, and local governments have been coordinating closely and mobilizing manpower to prevent the further spread of the disease, which is known for its high mortality rate among birds.
The Department of Livestock Services has also urged poultry farmers to strictly follow biosecurity measures and immediately report any suspected symptoms of bird flu to the authorities.
