Chinese Ambassador Congratulates Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Vows to Strengthen Ties
Kathmandu – China has officially extended its congratulations to Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, signaling a continued commitment to close bilateral relations. On Thursday, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Karki at her office in Kathmandu and conveyed Beijing’s support for her leadership.
According to a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy, Ambassador Chen expressed delight at meeting the new head of government. “It was a great pleasure to call on Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Madam Sushila Karki and extend our warm congratulations and support. We exchanged views and agreed to further promote our friendship and cooperation,” the embassy quoted the ambassador as saying. The meeting included discussions on ways to deepen friendship and expand practical cooperation between the two neighbors.
The embassy added that both sides shared perspectives on strengthening collaboration in areas of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing long-standing ties. China had earlier sent formal congratulations through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs soon after Karki’s appointment.
Prime Minister Karki, Nepal’s first female interim prime minister, assumed office earlier this month following the formation of a caretaker government. Her appointment has drawn swift attention from Nepal’s key neighbors. Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava met Karki on September 16 to deliver a congratulatory message from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two prime ministers also held a telephone conversation the same day, underscoring the importance of regional diplomacy during Nepal’s transitional period.
Diplomatic observers note that these early engagements from both China and India highlight Nepal’s strategic significance and the expectation of stable leadership as the country moves toward its next electoral phase.
