Government Unveils Free ‘Blue Bus’ Service to Improve Women’s Safety Across Nepal
25 buses to operate within 100 days; ride-sharing platforms to introduce SOS features and public vehicles to install CCTV systems
The Government of Nepal has announced a new initiative aimed at improving women’s safety in public transportation, introducing a free “Blue Bus” service dedicated to women across all seven provinces.
According to the announcement, the program will begin its first phase with at least 25 buses expected to come into operation within the next 100 days. The service is designed to provide safer, more accessible travel options for women, addressing long-standing concerns around harassment and insecurity in public transport.
In addition to the bus service, authorities have outlined broader safety measures. All public vehicles will be required to install CCTV cameras to enhance monitoring and accountability. Furthermore, ride-sharing applications operating in the country will need to integrate SOS features, allowing passengers to alert authorities quickly during emergencies.
Officials say these safety measures are expected to be implemented within 30 days, signaling a rapid push toward modernizing Nepal’s transport system. The initiative is being viewed as a significant step toward creating a safer public space for women while also aligning with broader goals of digital and infrastructural development.
The “Blue Bus” program is part of a wider effort by the government to strengthen public trust in transportation and ensure that safety remains a top priority nationwide.
