Indian Tourist Influx Brings Life Back to Pokhara: Hotels Full, Lakeside Buzzing Amid Peak Summer Escape
Pokhara– Pokhara is currently witnessing a remarkable surge in tourism activity as a large number of Indian tourists arrive in the lake city, filling hotels, trekking routes, and major attractions. The Lakeside area has become especially vibrant, with increased movement of visitors engaging in boating on Fewa Lake, trekking, and sightseeing. According to boat entrepreneurs, more than 5,000 tourists have been enjoying boat rides daily, making the lake unusually busy even during Nepal’s off-season.
Tourism entrepreneurs say hotel occupancy has reached around 90 percent, bringing relief and optimism to the hospitality sector. Popular trekking routes such as the Annapurna region, Mardi Himal, and Upper Mustang are also seeing a strong presence of Indian trekkers, particularly youth groups. Meanwhile, older visitors are largely focused on religious destinations like Muktinath and Pashupatinath, driven by cultural and spiritual significance.
Stakeholders from the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) Gandaki have described the trend as highly positive for Nepal’s tourism industry. They attribute the surge to multiple factors, including extreme summer heat in India, social media promotion of Nepal’s destinations, and easier travel accessibility from bordering Indian states. Many visitors are reportedly choosing Nepal as a preferred short-haul international destination for both pilgrimage and leisure travel.
However, tourism leaders also note growing challenges in crowd management, parking, and roadside congestion in major tourist zones. They have urged authorities to improve infrastructure, including rest stops and better-managed facilities along key routes, to ensure a more organized and sustainable tourism experience.
Hotel Association Pokhara has confirmed that this year marks one of the highest Indian tourist inflows in over three decades, with sustained occupancy levels throughout the season. Business owners say the consistent flow of visitors has revitalized local tourism-dependent livelihoods, especially boating and hospitality services around Fewa Lake.
Overall, Pokhara has transformed into a bustling tourist hub once again, with Indian visitors escaping intense heat in their home country and embracing the city’s cool climate, mountain views, and serene lake atmosphere
