Lalitpur introduces digital bus boards with live tracking system
Lalitpur-Passengers waiting at bus stops in Lalitpur are now getting real-time updates about their buses through a new digital tracking system installed in Pulchowk. The smart display board, which has been operating for the past three months, shows the live location of buses and informs commuters about which buses are on the way and how far they are from the stop. The system aims to reduce confusion and make public transport more convenient for daily travelers.
Buses operated by services such as Sajha Yatayat, Nepal Yatayat, Riddhi Siddhi Yatayat, Jharana Yatayat, Mahanagar Yatayat, and Dakshinkali Yatayat are currently connected to the system. The initiative was started by Ward No. 3 of Lalitpur Metropolitan City. Ward Chairperson Shrigopal Maharjan said the project was completed within about three weeks at a cost of around NPR 150,000.

The technology behind the project is being handled by Travel Nepal, which has already installed GPS devices in nearly 1,400 buses. The GPS information from those buses is sent directly to the digital boards, allowing passengers to see live updates instantly.According to Maharjan, the idea came after noticing that many passengers at bus stops were often confused about whether an arriving bus was the one they needed. This uncertainty caused delays and wasted time for both commuters and transport staff.

He said the goal was to create a simple digital solution that could help people manage their travel time more effectively. Since GPS technology was already being considered by Sajha Yatayat, the ward moved forward with the project.Pramod Adhikari explained that the boards also display different color codes based on each transport company’s branding, making it easier for passengers to recognize their buses quickly.Travelers can also check bus locations through the Travel Nepal app before reaching the bus stop. The app provides the same live tracking information shown on the digital display boards.

The technology is not only being used for buses. The ward has also started applying the same system to garbage collection vehicles. Residents receive alerts when garbage trucks are approaching their neighborhood, helping them prepare waste collection on time.Officials say more buses are expected to join the tracking network soon. They believe the system will improve both passenger convenience and vehicle management while making public transportation smarter and more organized in the future.
