Melamchi Water Supply to Kathmandu suspended after Flooding at Source
Kathmandu: Drinking water supply from the Melamchi Drinking Water Project to the Kathmandu Valley has been temporarily suspended from today after rainfall and flooding affected the project’s water source.
According to Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) spokesperson Bir Bahadur Chand, the flow of water from the Melamchi River to the treatment plant in Sundarijal has been stopped for the time being. He said the water at the source has become highly muddy due to continuous rainfall, making the treatment process difficult.
Chand said the supply will resume once the water at the source becomes clean and safe for processing. After that, distribution in Kathmandu Valley will continue according to the earlier fixed schedule.
However, if rainfall continues in the Melamchi area, the resumption of regular water supply may take more time, he added.
The temporary suspension is expected to affect drinking water distribution in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley until the source condition improves.
