Mother’s Day Around the World: A Celebration of Love Beyond Borders
Kathmandu: Every year, millions of people across the world celebrate Mother’s Day to honor the love, sacrifices, and strength of mothers and maternal figures. From heartfelt messages and flowers to family gatherings and special tributes, the day is observed in many countries including the United States, India, Australia, Japan, and much of Europe on the second Sunday of May. The occasion has become one of the most widely celebrated family events globally, recognizing the emotional and social role mothers play in society.
Although many countries celebrate Mother’s Day today, Nepal observes the occasion separately through “Mata Tirtha Aunsi,” popularly known as “Aama Ko Mukh Herne Din.” In 2026, Nepal celebrated the festival on April 16. The day carries deep cultural and emotional significance, as people honor their mothers with gifts, food, and blessings, while those who have lost their mothers visit Mata Tirtha in Kathmandu in remembrance.
Across cultures and borders, the meaning of Mother’s Day remains deeply personal and universal. Whether celebrated today or on a different date, the occasion serves as a reminder of the unconditional care, guidance, and sacrifices mothers make every day. In an increasingly fast-moving world, the celebration continues to bring families together and encourage gratitude for one of life’s strongest bonds.
