Kathmandu — The Nepali Army has rescued 883 people from several flood-affected areas of Rasuwa, including 350 workers and locals who had been trapped inside a tunnel of the Upper Trishuli Hydropower Project following a devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River.
The rescue operation was carried out amid adverse weather and strong flood currents, with the army describing the tunnel rescue as particularly challenging and risky.
More than 100 people were still believed to be trapped inside the tunnel as of Thursday, and army personnel were continuing efforts to bring them to safety.
A team of soldiers from Number 1 Second Movement Tactical Headquarters in Trishuli, under the command of Jamdar Bhaktajan Basnet, has been deployed for the tunnel rescue operation.
The army has also been conducting rescue operations in other remote parts of flood-hit Rasuwa.
A five-member team led by Lieutenant Colonel Abhishek Shahi from the CQR Team at Dhunche Barracks rescued and moved 533 people to safer locations from various areas of Syafrubesi, Timure, Mailung, Thulo Haku and Haku Besi.
The Nepali Army said its personnel rescued a total of 883 locals and workers from the affected areas of Rasuwa on Thursday, helping avert further loss of life amid the heightened flood risk.
The rescue efforts are continuing in areas where people remain stranded or face an immediate threat from the floods.
