Nepal moves to legalize conversion of fuel vehicles into electric cars to cut pollution and fuel imports
Kathmandu-The Government of Nepal has decided to introduce necessary legal provisions to allow petrol and diesel vehicles to be converted into electric vehicles (EVs).
A recent Cabinet meeting approved the plan to create clear laws that will make it easier to convert fuel-powered vehicles into electric ones.
Although the government had earlier allowed such conversions, the lack of proper guidelines created difficulties in implementation. Vehicle owners faced problems related to registration, renewal, and technical standards due to unclear legal provisions.
With the new decision, older vehicles can now be converted into eco-friendly electric vehicles at a lower cost. This move is expected to reduce Nepal’s dependence on imported fuel and increase the use of locally produced renewable energy.
The government has been promoting electric vehicles to reduce environmental pollution and encourage the use of clean energy. In recent years, EV imports have also increased. According to the Department of Customs, more than 6,000 electric vehicles were imported between Shrawan and Falgun of the current fiscal year.
