Kathmandu – Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has started circulation of a new Rs 1,000 denomination banknote (Series 2025) from Thursday, featuring an updated colour combination and enhanced security features while maintaining the existing size of the currency note.
The new banknote features a light green shade inside a purple-coloured border, giving it a distinct appearance from the previous series. According to the Currency Management Department of Nepal Rastra Bank, the note carries the signature of NRB Governor Prof. Dr. Bishwo Nath Poudel and has been issued with serial numbers ranging from T/92 000001 to T/50 999999.
The note continues to feature important national symbols, including Mount Everest on the left side and Laliguras (Rhododendron) on the right side. It also includes a 1000-denomination watermark and a blue-coloured see-through register that becomes visible when viewed against light.
To strengthen security against counterfeiting, the new note includes advanced features such as a colour-changing image of Goddess Bhagwati, which appears golden when viewed directly and changes to green when tilted. It also contains a 3.5 mm wide colour-changing security thread marked with “NRB” and “1000”.
Nepal Rastra Bank stated that the new banknote has been introduced as part of its regular currency management process to improve security standards while preserving Nepal’s national identity and design elements.
