Kathmandu – Passport distribution services are expected to be disrupted for one to three weeks as the Department of Passports, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is shifted to a new system.
It has been stated by the department that service delivery may be affected during the interim period until the new system is fully stabilized.
According to a notice issued by the department, passport services provided through district and area administration offices as well as Nepali diplomatic missions abroad may be suspended for one to three weeks, while services delivered directly by the Department of Passports may be halted for around one week.
It has also been informed that after the implementation of the new system, one to three months may be required for full stabilization. During this transitional period, longer processing times than usual may be faced by applicants submitting passport applications through district and area administration offices or Nepali diplomatic missions abroad.
In view of the situation, service seekers who may require passports within the next six months, that is, by mid-October 2026, have been requested to complete the process in advance before the interim phase begins. Passport services have been advised to be obtained, as per existing procedures, through the concerned district or area administration office, Nepali diplomatic mission abroad, or the Department of Passports.
It has further been stated that the date of implementation of the new system, along with the arrangements to be made during the transition period, will be announced through a separate notice.
