Buenos Aires – Lionel Messi has made his final appearance for Argentina, bringing an end to his 21-year international career in front of more than 85,000 fans at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium.
The 39-year-old captain delivered a memorable farewell as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0. Messi provided two assists and scored a penalty in the 71st minute to mark his record 208th international appearance and 126th goal for Argentina.
Messi set up Nicolás Otamendi for Argentina’s opening goal before Nico Paz doubled the lead. He then completed the scoring from the penalty spot, sending the packed stadium into celebration.
The farewell, dubbed “The Last Tango,” was filled with emotional moments. Messi was seen wiping away tears as the team bus passed through streets crowded with supporters. He later entered the pitch with his three children as his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and mother Celia Cuccittini watched from the VIP box.
A giant Argentina No. 10 shirt carrying the message “Gracias” was displayed on the pitch before kick-off. The match was also briefly stopped in the 10th minute in tribute to Messi’s iconic shirt number, with the crowd giving him a standing ovation.
After the match, Messi thanked supporters and reflected on his long international career, saying representing Argentina for more than two decades had been a huge source of pride.
Messi’s international career included a 2021 Copa América title, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América, ending Argentina’s long wait for major international success.
Although Messi has retired from international football, he remains under contract with Inter Miami until 2028, meaning he could continue his club career.
With 208 appearances, 126 goals and a World Cup triumph, Messi leaves the Argentina national team as one of the most decorated and influential players in the country’s football history.
