Kathmandu – China’s Xizang Autonomous Region has provided Nepal with materials for two 100-metre Bailey bridges to help restore road connectivity damaged by the floods and landslides of August 26.
The bridge components were formally handed over to Nepal during a ceremony in Lhasa on Friday, with Nepal’s Consul General in Lhasa Laxmi Prasad Niraula and Ouyang Zhibing, deputy director general of the Xizang Foreign Affairs Office, exchanging signed handover documents.
The assistance followed a request from the Nepali Consulate General in Lhasa for 30 Bailey bridges to reconnect flood-hit areas where roads and bridges were washed away.
The materials, including Bailey panels, decking, steel beams and other structural components, arrived at the Rizi (Lizi/Korala) border port on Friday.
China has also agreed to provide technical support for installation, with a team of Chinese technicians expected to travel to Nepal to assist with construction.
The two bridges are expected to help reopen vital transport links and improve access for rescue, relief and reconstruction efforts in flood-affected areas.
The assistance was delivered under the message “Shared Mountains, Shared Rivers—United in Weal and Woe: Xizang Rushes to Nepal’s Aid,” highlighting the close ties between Nepal and China.
