Social media registration made mandatory in Nepal
Kathmandu: The Nepal Government has reinforced its directive requiring social media platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and LinkedIn to register under the “Guidelines for Regulating the Use of Social Media, 2080.” The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) has issued a renewed notice emphasizing compliance to ensure accountability and a safer digital space. As per Clause 3 of the directive, all social media entities must officially enlist with MoCIT and appoint a local representative. Platforms must also establish a designated contact point in Nepal, with non-compliance risking a potential ban.
The regulation aims to enhance digital governance, protect user privacy, and promote cybersecurity, digital literacy, and responsible content moderation. The Ministry has stressed that adherence is crucial for a well-regulated digital environment, urging stakeholders to comply with national laws.
