KATHMANDU – The Tibet Autonomous Region of China has provided two Bailey bridges to Nepal to support reconstruction and connectivity efforts in areas affected by the recent floods.
The bridge materials were formally handed over during a programme held in Lhasa on Friday. Nepal’s Consul General in Lhasa Laxmi Prasad Niraula and Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Tibet Autonomous Region Ouyang Zhibing exchanged signed handover documents during the ceremony.
The support was provided following a request from the Nepali Consulate General in Lhasa, which had sought assistance from the Tibet Foreign Affairs Office for 30 Bailey bridges to help restore damaged infrastructure in flood-affected areas.
In response to the request, the Tibet Autonomous Region government handed over materials for two 100-metre-long Bailey bridges. The materials arrived at the Korala (Lizi) border point in Upper Mustang on Friday, and the Nepali side is scheduled to receive them officially.
China has also agreed to provide technical support for the installation of the bridges. A team of Chinese technicians is expected to arrive in Nepal soon to assist with the construction process and ensure effective installation.
The Bailey bridge materials include essential components such as Bailey panels, stiffening cords, sway braces, brace bolts, Bailey pins, decking panels, steel plates, beams, channel steel and welding pipes.
The bridges are expected to help restore transportation links and improve access in areas where flood damage has affected road connectivity and local infrastructure.
