All Major Exit Routes from Kathmandu Closed as Landslides Trigger Travel Suspension
Kathmandu- Authorities have suspended vehicular movement on all major highways leading out of the Kathmandu Valley after continuous rainfall triggered landslides and heightened the risk of further disasters.
According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, long-distance vehicles departing via Nagdhunga, Sanga, and Pharping have been halted, with buses being held at bus parks and other designated areas until road conditions improve.
Traffic Inspector Kiran Ghimire said the Nagdhunga–Muglin–Narayangadh Highway has been completely blocked after landslides struck Kerabari and Tuinkhola in Chitwan, disrupting traffic in both directions.
Travel along the BP Highway has also been suspended due to rising water levels in the Roshi River and mudslides in the Mangaltar area. Similarly, the Pharping–Phakhel–Sisneri–Hetauda road has been closed, while landslides at Pangdure and Takunje have blocked the Kantipath route.
Authorities had already prohibited night-time travel on Monday due to persistent rainfall and elevated landslide risks. The suspension has now been extended into daytime, with officials saying services will resume only after a thorough assessment of road safety.
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office stated that decisions on reopening the routes will be based on ongoing risk analysis.
Meanwhile, the Chitwan District Administration Office had issued a notice on Monday evening suspending traffic movement along vulnerable sections of the highway until further notice, citing the continued threat of landslides.
