Kathmandu – The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nepal held a memorial service on Monday, observing Nepal’s National Day of Mourning for victims of the devastating August 26 Bhotekoshi River flood and mudslide disaster. The Chinese national flag at the embassy was flown at half-mast in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
The disaster, triggered by a massive glacier collapse and resulting floods along the Nepal–China border region, caused widespread destruction in Nepal’s Rasuwa, Nuwakot and surrounding areas, while also severely affecting Gyirong , Xizang Autonomous Region, China. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing on both sides of the border.
According to available updates, the disaster has caused more than 1,300 deaths and over 5,000 people missing across Nepal and Xizang Autonomous Region, China. On the Chinese side, authorities have reported 43 deaths and 519 people missing in the affected region. Nepal’s official agencies continue to update casualty and missing-person figures as search, identification and recovery operations progress, with the latest verified numbers changing as more information becomes available.
The memorial service reflected the enduring friendship, solidarity and mutual support between Nepal and China at a time of profound humanitarian challenge. It also highlighted the continued close cooperation between the two countries through rescue and relief operations, technical assistance, expertise and the sharing of information and resources to support affected communities.
The Embassy reaffirmed that Nepal and China would continue to stand together in solidarity, with resilience and hope, as efforts move forward to support recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction in the disaster-affected areas.
