Kathmandu — Nepal Police has strengthened security measures across the country under the Special Security Plan 2083 to maintain peace and prevent criminal and untoward activities during Tihar, Nepal Sambat and Chhath.
Police personnel have been deployed according to local security needs to prevent theft, robbery, gambling, betting, disputes and other unlawful activities during the festive period.
Security checks and surveillance have been increased in major markets, public transport areas, border points and customs areas. Special patrol teams have also been mobilised to monitor the illegal sale, storage and use of fireworks and other explosive materials.
Nepal Police spokesperson Abhi Narayan Kafle said fire and disaster-response teams have been kept on standby around the clock due to the risk of fires and accidents associated with oil lamps, electrical lights and fireworks during Tihar.
Local administrations have been asked to ensure that Deusi-Bhailo programmes are conducted in an organised manner and within designated hours. Police have also urged people to avoid excessive noise, unsafe fireworks, gambling, betting and disturbances linked to alcohol consumption.
Plainclothes police have been deployed in areas considered vulnerable to gambling and other unlawful activities. Authorities are also monitoring festive gatherings and processions to reduce the possibility of disputes and clashes.
Police are paying particular attention to activities that could affect children, elderly people and patients, including loud music, DJs, sound systems and fireworks late at night. Measures have also been strengthened to address domestic violence, physical disputes and other conflicts.
Authorities have urged the public to immediately contact the nearest police station, fire service or relevant authority in case of a fire, explosion or other emergency. The public can also report the illegal trading, storage or use of fireworks and explosives through the police hotline 100.
