AI Research and Development Center launched in Lumbini to boost Local Tech Innovation
Kathmandu: An AI Research and Development Center has been launched in the Lumbini region with the aim of strengthening technology innovation, research, and practical learning in the province.
Western Mega College, Butwal, and Lumbini Tech Innovation Center have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to connect academic learning with industry-based practical experience. The agreement is expected to create new opportunities for students, researchers, and technology professionals in the region.
The partnership focuses on bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world industry skills. Through the newly established center, students will be able to gain hands-on experience in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, generative AI, data modelling, and prompt engineering.
The MoU was formally signed by Lumbini Tech Innovation Center Founder Chairperson Dhan Bahadur Rana and the Principal of Western Mega College. The program was also attended by Krishna Sapkota, a noted AI researcher and Founding Director of LTIC, and Krishna Shrestha, BIT Coordinator of Western Mega College.
Speaking at the event, representatives from both institutions said the center would help reduce brain drain by providing students with modern technology exposure and career opportunities within Lumbini Province. They said the initiative would allow local talent to learn, research, and work with advanced technologies without having to leave the region.
Under the collaboration, IT and BIT students will receive industry-focused workshops led by senior engineers. They will also get opportunities to participate in corporate internships and work on live projects through LTIC, helping them build practical experience while continuing their studies.
The agreement also aims to support job placement opportunities by aligning academic programs with the needs of the technology market. Skilled graduates are expected to benefit from direct employment opportunities in local and national IT companies.
The research and development center will also focus on using AI to address local challenges in areas such as agriculture, administration, and the economy. Students and faculty members will be encouraged to conduct research and develop technology-based solutions for real-world problems.
The launch of the center is being seen as an important step toward positioning Lumbini as a growing hub for artificial intelligence, innovation, and technology-driven education in Nepal.
