Tundikhel turns green again as grass planting begins in Kathmandu
Kathmandu: The historic Tundikhel in the heart of Kathmandu is slowly turning green again as grass planting work has started under the Tundikhel Greening Program.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has started the project to make Tundikhel cleaner, greener, and more organized. The campaign is being carried out in coordination with the Nepali Army and other concerned bodies. The open ground, which had become dusty, dry, and barren in many areas, is now being developed into a green public space.
Under the project, the ground will be leveled, fertile soil will be added, and Bermuda grass will be planted in different parts of Tundikhel. The work is being carried out across around 61,263 square meters on the southern side of the military pavilion. According to reports, the project has an estimated cost of around Rs 42.5 million, while the contract agreement has been signed for around Rs 27 million.
The greening work is expected to help control dust, improve the beauty of the area, support environmental balance, and provide a cleaner open space for the public. Water management systems, including boring at different corners and rainwater recharge pits, are also planned to support long-term maintenance of the grass.
Authorities have said that no permanent structures will be built in the Tundikhel area. The space will be managed as an open and public-use area. Regular irrigation, protection, and management will also be carried out after the grass is planted to make the greenery sustainable.
Tundikhel is one of Kathmandu’s most important historic open spaces. It has long been used for public gatherings, military parades, festivals, sports, and morning and evening walks. Often called one of Kathmandu’s open breathing spaces, the return of greenery is expected to give the capital a cleaner and more refreshing public ground.
With dubo and grass now being planted, many people are hopeful that Tundikhel will once again become a beautiful green space in the middle of the busy city.
