Flood Alert Issued for Nepal’s Western Terai as Heavy Rain Threatens Several Provinces
Kathmandu-Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division has issued a flood alert for several districts in the western Terai, warning of a moderate risk of flooding today as monsoon rains continue across the country.
According to the division, the districts of Kanchanpur, Kailali, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, and Nawalparasi West face the highest flood risk, while water levels in many small rivers and streams nationwide are expected to rise, posing a general flood threat.Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel near riverbanks, streams, and low-lying areas vulnerable to inundation.
Heavy rainfall was recorded overnight and early Thursday in parts of the western Terai, although precipitation has eased in most areas this morning.The Meteorological Forecasting Division has forecast moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning later today in parts of the Terai in Sudurpashchim Province and isolated areas of Lumbini Province. Similar weather conditions are also expected in a few locations across Madhesh Province and the southern plains of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
The weather office has also warned of heavy rainfall at one or two locations in the hilly regions of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, while isolated areas in both the hills and plains of Sudurpashchim Province could experience intense downpours.Heavy rain is expected to continue tonight in parts of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.Looking ahead, forecasters say heavy rainfall is likely on Friday in the hills and plains of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, while Saturday’s forecast indicates heavy rain across Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces.
Disaster management authorities have advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert, monitor official weather updates, and take necessary precautions as the monsoon remains active across Nepal.
